New Year's Resolutions

Every year, people make new year's resolutions. Most people break them rather quickly, so I figure that if I share mine with all of you, maybe it will make me more accountable and more likely to stick with them. During 2013, I resolve to:

Wikipedia
Put together a strength training program (and stick to it)
I have been running for a couple of years now, but I do absolutely zero weight training and it shows. I'm sick of my flabby arms and gut, and this year, I'm going to do something about it by pumping some iron.

NY Times
Run one race every month
In June, I ran my first half-marathon, and in 2013, I want to run the Chicago Marathon. To achieve this goal, I need to stay in shape. When I sign up for races, it forces me to train, so this resolution will keep me in my Brooks all year long.

Brown-Eyed Baker
Host a dinner party for 8
We registered for fine china and recently purchased a dining room table that seats 8 people. I want to put these things to good use, entertain our friends, and increase my cooking skills. Super pumped for this resolution!

Ork Posters
Visit at least 5 new Chicago neighborhoods
There are 77 separate neighborhoods in Chicago, and I have visited a pathetically tiny number of them. This year, it is my goal to explore more of my beautiful city. Look out, Hyde Park, Chinatown, and Ukrainian Village! I'm comin' your way!

Closet Cooking
Make mole from scratch
Mexican food is my absolute favorite kind of food. I could eat it everyday. Mole is one of my favorite Mexican dishes to order when I'm out, but it's incredibly time-consuming to make from scratch. 2013 is the year I give it a shot. Anyone have an abuela with a secret family recipe they can lend me?

I'll keep you posted as I achieve my various resolutions over the course of the year. Hopefully I can keep them all!

What are your new year's resolutions?

  1. These sound like some very attainable resolutions! I also need work on a strength routine and not let running be my only form of exercise!

  2. I love the resolution to run a race every month. I really want to run a marathon this year too, but I really hate crowds and getting downtown is a major hassle, so I think I might do a different one than the Chicago marathon. I'm torn though, because it seems like it would be really fun because there are so many people cheering you on and stuff. What other races are you planning on doing? I really like the idea of doing one a month and I almost want to steal it, except I'm nervous that might get really expensive...

    1. I'm definitely running the Shamrock Shuffle in April, and I plan on doing a half-marathon in the spring (probably in May). I am a little worried about it being expensive, but I'm going to try to be good about planning in advance and getting coupon codes. Plus, you usually get a shirt for running, so it's basically just like buying workout clothes!

  3. Your resolutions are a great mix of fun and self improvement, sounds great to me! I never ran in it, but the Illinois marathon (they have 1/2, 10k, and 5k races too) is supposed to be a great race, if you're looking for new locations :)

    1. Thanks for the tip! I'm looking for a spring half-marathon, so that could be perfect.
